8th “Bioeconomy in Europe” Report: new data presented by Intesa San Paolo, Assobiotec and Cluster Spring

On June 30, the presentation event of the 8th Report "The Bioeconomy in Europe”, prepared by Intesa Sanpaolo's Research and Studies Department, in collaboration with Federchimica-Assobiotec and the Italian Cluster of Circular Bioeconomy SPRING, was held at the Chamber of Commerce in Salerno.

During the conference, entitled "Bioeconomy: for the well-being and resilience of Italy”, the numbers of the sector collected in the report, updated to 2021, were illustrated.

According to data, last year bioeconomy in our country generated an output of about 364.3 billion euros, employing just over two million people, thus registering a rebound in output of 10.6 percent, spread across all sectors. The evolution observed in 2021 therefore brings the Italian bioeconomy to count for 11.4 percent of total output, an increase compared to the previous two years.

The analysis then confirmed the high resilience of this meta-sector, which in 2020 was less impacted by the effects of the pandemic and recorded a significant increase in 2021 in Italy and in the other countries analyzed. Indeed, at European level, the document shows that in France, Germany, Italy and Spain bioeconomy generated an output of about 1.500 billion euros, employing more than 7 million people.
The Report was opened by a preface written by Catia Bastioli, CEO Novamont and President Cluster SPRING. Bastioli particularly highlighted how, during these years characterised by the pandemic, bioeconomy has proven to be a resilient sector, able to compete at the highest level in Europe and with great potential for interconnection and systemic development. She then recalled the leading role of our country in this field.

The report presentation was also an opportunity to announce the signing of the agreement between the Intesa San Paolo Study and Research Center and Cluster SPRING to implement jointly analysis and research initiatives aimed at strengthening, disseminating and promoting knowledge of the bioeconomy, environmental sustainability and the circular economy.
